Malik is a multitalented musician and performer from Detroit, Michigan. He has studied vocal music and electrical engineering at Wayne State University. Malik has acted and sung in several touring gospel plays. Malik has performed as a background singer and session performer with artists such as James Cleveland, Mattie Moss Clark, the Clark Sisters, the Winans, Donald Vails, the Hawkins Family, and Thomas Whitfield. He has appeared as a featured vocalist with gospel and R&B artist Ortheia Barnes, Rejoice Community Choir, Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, and in his early vocal groups Voices of Joy and Love. His vocal career led to forming a band called Planet Pluto in 1996, where he enhanced his skills as a keyboardist. Planet Pluto’s members included fellow musicians Dwele, Siddiq of Platinum Pied Pipers, and Cen Dervin (formerly with Black Bottom Collective). Malik has been warmly received in performances on tour as a vocalist with Dwele, as a keyboardist with Paul Randolph, and in solo performance at the Hothouse in Chicago. Malik has also performed with John Arnold and Ayro at the first Third Party Candidate show (improv at its finest). He has entertained audiences at the 2006 African World Festival, 2006 Woodbridge Summerfest, 2006 Movement Festival (special guest appearance with Louie Vega), 2005 Fuse-In: Detroit’s Electronic Movement (with Mike Clark), 2005 Motor City Music Conference, Movement 04: Detroit’s Electronic Movement Festival (Painted Pictures), 2003 Movement Festival (with Dwayne Jensen), 2000 - 2002 Detroit Electronic Music Festivals (with Mike Clark, Alton Miller). Malik produced several poetry and music events at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and was a featured artist in the Detroit Public Library’s Noontime Concert Series. His poetry and music performances have been featured with the poetry troupe EmRuop and in concert with the Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron and Jessica Care Moore. He has also entertained audiences at the 2000-2005 Winter Music Conferences in Miami, Florida and in 2003 at Club Module in Tokyo, Japan (Beatdown Sessions Series). Malik appeared in a special performance at the 2006 Winter Music Conference, The Pocket: This Music Is Life, presenting a taste of his upcoming solo project. He continues to produce events forThe Pocket in Detroit at 5th Avenue Downtown, featuring new and established artists and DJ’s. The Pocket has featured many artists such as Painted Pictures, Joshua Adams, Pirahnahead, Doc Link , Javontte, Craig Huckaby, Allan Barnes Trio, Martin Luther, Amp Fiddler, John Arnold, Sean Blackman, Ayro, Bill Beaver, Khary Kimani Turner, Dwele, Slum Village, Phat Kat, Finale, Invincible, Marv 1, Roy Davis, Jr., Mike Clark, Norm Talley, Keith Worthy, Dwayne Jensen, Al McKenzie and Penny Wells, :brownstudy, Lola Valley, Funkilinium, Gorilla Funk Mob featuring Neco Redd, 87, Fluent. Malik’s releases include Malik’s Mind and Poetic Reflections (Truth Manifest Records). Malik’s projects also include Conscious Exposure and Dinner Music (Truth Manifest Records). Malik has released a well-received solo EP, Caterpillar (Third Ear Recordings). As the founder of Painted Pictures in 2001, Malik has explored provocative and original jazzfusionhouse, funk and soul. Painted Pictures released its debut project, Tuxedo Sessions, in 2004 (Truth Manifest Records) and the Tuxedo Sessions Japan Edition in 2005 (Truth Manifest Records/P-Vine Records). The band continues to entertain audiences at The Pocket, a monthly series presented by Truth Manifest Records at 5th Avenue Downtown. Malik has also released the recent singles Close to You, a collaboration with No Milk, featured on his Up All Night disc (Music Conception/Soundscape); Back 2 Chicago with Roy Davis, Jr. and Doc Link (King Street); Inside, a collaboration with John Arnold, featured on his Neighborhood Science project (Ubiquity Recordings). His latest solo project will be released in 2007. As the CEO of Truth Manifest Records, Malik expresses his creative vision in varied projects. Malik is honored to have received a nomination as 2005 Outstanding Electronic/Dance Writer Producer of the Year at the Detroit Music Awards. Malik continues to produce and write for a number of national and international artists.
