Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.) is an internationally renowned producer and DJ who continues to exist beneath the radar outside the electronic music scene in Detroit. He continues to perform through Europe and Japan at such well-known venues as the Jazz Café in London, Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals, and Club Yellow in Japan.

From working since adolescence in his grandfather’s jazz club to watching his father play piano and guitar Moodymann has been surrounded by music. He worked at several Detroit record stores in the early nineties including Buy-Rite, which still operates on 7 Mile in northwest Detroit and a store owned by producer Blake Baxter. Until finding his own niche in the electronic music scene, he produced hip-hop for several groups in the city.

During the mid-nineties Kenny deejayed at the now defunct Better Days and Music Institute as well as Detroit based Outcast Motorcycle Club. At that time he was known as "House". He began releasing some of his music on Carl Craig’s Planet E Records and became quite popular in France. From there his popularity grew and he started his own label KDJ Records in 1994 with the Moody Trax EP. His discography on this label, and many others includes over 100 releases.

His releases on this label and others have been as diverse as his influences. While categorized in electronic music, his collaborations have included work with an array of Detroit artists from jazz saxophonist Norma Jean Bell to rock group the Dirtbombs.

Moodymann’s sound is a hybrid form of techno/house dance music arrived at via innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most celebrated albums of the late 90s. He went on to produce such classic albums as Mahogany Brown, Forevernevermore, Silence in the Secret Garden and Black Mahogani for Peacefrog in London.

Moodymann started Mahogani Music in 2002 as an avenue to showcase unseen Detroit talent. The label has released albums and 12” of artists such as Amp Fiddler, Pirahnahead, Andres and jazz singer Roberta Sweed. He is currently completing his long awaited album Pitch Black City from which he will be performing selections at Movement 07.
